City in W Yorkshire, England, on the river
Aire; population (1984) 712,200. Industries
include engineering, printing, chemicals,
glass, and woollens. Notable buildings
include the Town Hall designed by Cuthbert
Brodrick, Leeds University 1904, the Art
Gallery 1844, Temple Newsam (birthplace of
Henry Darnley in 1545, now a museum), and the
Cistercian Abbey of Kirkstall 1147. It is a
centre of communications where road, rail,
and canal (to Liverpool and Goole) meet.
Opera North is based here, and the Leeds
International Pianoforte Competition is held
here every three years.
